Vase Interpretation Quiz?
Based upon Dr. Castellani's presentation and your notes, evaluate this black/red figure vase image. Please decode through commentary.
Think about direction, borders, placement, and symbols or
manifestations. This blog response is a quiz and should be completed
during class today.

On the vase, you can easily distinguish Athena for her helmet crest, which extends past the border of the painting. You can also see Zeus, with Athena coming out of his head. This painting somewhat shows how battle ready Athena was, even right after she popped out of Zeus's head she was suited in full armor with a shield and spear.
Athena is seen coming out of Zeus's head holding a shield and a spear. Zeus is seen sitting down holding his lightning bolt shaped weapon. The other gods are seen surrounding Zeus while Athena comes out of Zeus's head. Apollo appears to be to the left holding a lyre. Ares appears standing behind a woman goddess who is motioning to Zeus. This woman goddess might be Hera.
every single vase has a very discriptive meaning to it. for this one i noticed how there were 4 vs 2 and the pepole on the left 2 of there hats are going into the bourder witch also means that they are both powefull. but it seems like the pepole on the left have more wepons to use and the pepole on the right only have 1 shield and 1 spear. and they both look confused on why they are fighting.
I noticed in the picture that there is a smaller man on top of Zeus i'm guessing. He is exceeding the border of the vase, which puts him into a category of rule breakers. I notice that there are men/gods on the left, and a woman and a soldier on the right, which makes me think that all the people on the left are looked at as gods, and the people on the rights are considered to be "lower" than Zeus and the others in the picture. The reason why I think it's Zeus in the picture is because he's holding something in his hand that I think to be is the lightning bolt.
Based on the presentation that Dr. Castellani had given on Tuesday, I would say that the vase in the linked picture is symbolic of multiple things. The first thing that it symbolizes is the goddess Athena, she is coming out of Zeus's head, being born, with a spear and shield in hand her two favorite weapons. Athena's helmet is breaking through the border of the art, this is symbolizing Athena's behavior, a person to break the boundaries and expectations to achieve victory on any scale. Another thing to note is the direction that Zeus and Athena are facing, right, this was the ancient Greeks way of telling which person was divine and wich mortal, if you were facing right, like Zeus and Athena, then you were divine if facing left you are mortal. Im, sure there are other little details in the vase that I had missed but I am almost sure that I covered the largest detail with full attention.
One thing I can tell immediately is Athena at the top with her head poking through the top designs. Next, I can tell that there Athena is coming out of the head of Zeus (who is holding lightning bolts) but he is sitting down relating himself more to the mortals because he is giving birth. On the mortal side of the vase, it shows a person holding a huge lyre, probably meaning he is giving praise to the Gods. On the immortal side, it shows a shield of imitation and a goddess, probably Hera, looking at Athena coming out and probably being mad.
In the center of the vase it i Zeus kneeling down, holding what appears to be lightning bolts with Athena coming out of his head with a shield and spear. It also looks like Ares is on the right because he looks like a soldier and Apollo on the left with a lyre or instrument.
Athena is coming out of/or behind, Zeus's head. Athena is holding her spear and shield. Other gods are standing around Zeus. Zeus is holding his lightning bolt. Athena was very prepared for battle at any time.
On the border Athena is coming out of Zeus' head and breaking the border possibly showing how she is very powerful. Athena is holding a spear and a shield showing how good she was as a warrior. Zeus looks like he is guiding athena towards the enemy to fight.
zues is facing towads the right but he is in the middle ofmthe picture with athena b2ing born from his head. athena is holding a spear and sheild her more iconic weapon as well as other gods standing around witnessing the birth of athena. each god and goddess holding their siginture weapon or item to them.

The gods are easily distinguished in this depiction; they are staring from above.
Zeus is carrying his lighting bolts, sitting on a "throne" and holding out a hand as to issue a command. Apollo is carrying his lyre. Athena stands out with her crest and spear, but the shield faces away from the viewer. Ares is visible on the right with his spear and his shield faces the viewer.
The vase depicts Athena being born from Zeus head with other gods around him as this all takes place on his throne, while he holds his thunderbolt. Athena is born fully grown and with armor, and a spear, and shield, Athena also breaks the border of design at the top. Those standing around her are the other gods she will possibly have relationships with later including Ares on the right.
In this vase there is a lot going on with a lot of different meanings you can see Athena and her head crest going out of the border you can also see her coming out of Zeus's head. In this painting you can see that Athena is battle ready with her spear in hand and armor and her helmet.
On the far left, there is a black figure standing and observing the activities going on in the rest of the image, next to the first figure there's another black figure holding a lyre possibly representing the Greek god Apollo. Next up is the figure that's sitting down. This figure is holding lightning bolts and sitting on what appears to be a throne. This is most definitely Zuse. Next to Zuse is a white figure or a mortal and they´re being protected by another black figure with a helmet and a shield. This is probably the Greek goddess Athena. In the background, there is another mortal in war attire and it´s breaking the barrier, possibly to show that they´re going to have a large impact. The whole image represents a mortal consulting the gods and possibly asking for help. The sides are shifted, just like how Dr. Castellani said, one side is opposed to humans (Apollo and Zuse) and one is for humans (Athena)
Zeus seems to be sitting in the middle of the vase. I know it is Zeus because he is holding lightning bolts. It seems that there is a women on the right side of the vase meaning he is more divine which could mean she is a goddess or giving birth to a god/goddess. There seems to a man above Zeus who is going above the border who is fighting the right side of the vase so clearly it is someone of great power. There seems to be Apollo holding a lyre next to Zeus. It seems that they are discussing something or about to go to war.
Since we know that Athena was born out of Zeus' head, we can infer that that main figure is Zeus with his lightning bolts in his hand. Popping out of his head is Athena, she has her spear and shield already with her. Athena pushes limits. She exceeds her boundaries and wants victory in everything she does. That is why her head is reaching into the border of the vase. The person on the far left is looking down toward the divine mortal side, so they must be supportive of the mortals who prove they are worthy and divine. The person on left of Zeus looks like they are holding a lyre and possibly of a harp, so if you infer the lyre, it could be the Apollo.
In the picture I think it showed a descriptive meaning of the gods power. It seems like one side has more weapons and the other side has only shields. It also looks like it's 4 against 2. I think the picture could be symbolizing the people considered lower than the gods.
This vase depicts the birth of Athena. In the middle we can see the small image of Athena being born from the head of Zeus. We know that it is Zeus because of the lightning bolts that he holds in his hand. Athena is shown breaking the border of the vase which demonstrates how she 'defies gravity' and how wise she is. She born wearing a helmet and holding a shield symbolizing that she is the goddess of wisdom and strategic warfare. I think that the God that is wearing the helmet is Ares the God of war. He is holding a decorated shield and wearing a helmet. He stands next to possibly Hera or Aphrodite and the both witness the birth of Athena. The winged sandals on the God on the far left symbolize Hermes also attending the birth. The last God standing next to Hermes is Apollo and he holds a lyre. Hermes and Apollo face towards Zeus as possibly Hera and Ares are also facing Zeus but Zeus is facing towards the goddess and Ares.
In this picture of a black and red figure vase you see a lot of different depictions of gods. You can tell that Athena is at the top because she was born from Zeus's head as shown on this vase and she also has a spear and shield and goes into the boundary of the decorative part of the vase. Zeus is shown holding possible lightning bolts in his hand. Apollo's armor also reaches the top boundary signifying his importance.
