Vase Interpretation Quiz?
Based upon Dr. Castellani's presentation and your notes, evaluate this black/red figure vase image. Please decode through commentary.
Think about direction, borders, placement, and symbols or
manifestations. This blog response is a quiz and should be completed
during class today.

The woman on the right can be assumed as Athena, since she is on the divinity side and there are a couple of her symbols (shields and spears). Zeus is in the middle. Athena is being born out of his head. The man directly next to Zeus is Apollo, because he his holding a lyre. Next to Apollo is Hermes, since he has his travelers hat on.
We see Athena emerging from Zeus's cranium in the vas. And we can see the figure right behind zeus holding a Lyre, which we can only assume is apollo
The man in the middle is Zeus and he is was creating Athena from his cranium. He is in a fight and wanted to be helped. The man on the far left is Hermes and Apollo was right next to him.
This vase is a depiction of the birth of Athena. Zeus wanted his own daughter, that he didn't share with anybody else, so he birthed Athena out of his head. It also looks like Zeus is offering something to the character on the right. Although Zeus is divine, it looks like his friends on the left side are mortal, unless this vase is not typical.
In this image, we can see a gathering of characters around Zeus and Athena. Here in this specific moment, she is being birthed from his head, wielding a spear and a shield. We see her head surpassing the border of the image, perhaps demonstrating her ability to go above and beyond in the myths she is represented by. We see her facing the right, demonstrating her strive towards divinity and her rightful place there.
This vase is a picture of Athena's birth in which she comes out of Zeus's head. The symbolism is that she was already wise and smart enough to be ready for war as she was carrying her shield and spear. The figure behind Zeus is Apollo as he is holding his lyre. Behind Apollo is Hermes as he is wearing the messenger cap. In front of Zeus is Hera as she is his wife so it makes sense she'd be close in front of him. Behind Hera is Ares as he is holding shield and spear as well as a helmet.
Athena is being birthed out of Zeus's head in this image, she has a spear and a shield, often a symbol of her. Zeus is holding onto his lightning bolts. She is in the middle which makes sense as she is divine but encourages the mortals to become divine themselves. She has no borders around her either. Hermes is on the very left in his travelers hat, as he is the one who most often interacts with the mortals. Aries is on the very right, in full war armor.
It appears that Zeus is in the center holding lightning bolts while athena is being born from his head. Athena overlaps the upper border as she is usually depicted as "having no borders". Hermes is on the far left wearing the cap of invisibility, it looks like Apollo may be between Zeus and Hermes holding what looks like a Lyre in his hands.
This vase shows Athena being birthed out of Zeus' head. I think it then shows all the other gods around him watching. Even at birth, it shows Athena breaking the top boundary. All the gods around Zeus look very impressed or surprised. The vase shows Athena almost jumping to the divine side, I think that shows that she is on her way to becoming a god. Or almost like she is being created to be a god. I think it is Hermes on the far left. I think it is weird that he is on the left(mortal) side. I think it also fits him though. I think this because he has to go down to earth to get peoples souls to take them to the underworld. He is the transporter so he has to go down to the mortal level at times to get the soul.

It looks to me like Athena is popping out of Zeus's head as he sits before the people coming towards him. Hermes (Zeus's son) in the background flanking shortly behind him with his brother apollo another of Zeus's kids. it looks to me like Ares the god of war is on the far right of the vase dressed in armor next to Hera (Zeus's wife) as the yall watch Zeus spring forth a god from his head.
On the left I would say is Hermes because of his cap of invisibility and what maybe looks like a wing on his shoe. Second from the left seems to be Apollo because it looks like he's holding a lyre. In the center looks to be Zeus because he's holding a cluster of lightning bolts. The small figure on top of Zeus' head and the two standing on his right are Athena being born from his head and growing into a warrior.
There are a lot of different symbols that are shown on this vase, most of which are portrayed through images of the gods and goddesses. Athena can be seen in the center at the top of the vase and I think that placement has to do with her as a goddess and the amount of power that she possesses along with her being born out of Zeus' head. Zeus can be found in the middle of everyone and I think that is because he is the center of all gods and everyone looks to him for their needs. I noticed that the goddesses are painted white and the gods are painted black and I believe that is to show a sense of purity that the goddesses have over the gods.
For this vase you have Athena in the background holding a spear. The man lifting his hand in the front is Zeus. His beard is a sign but he is sitting down with the other gods serving him as Athena is coming out of his head. She is also outside the mural with no boundaries. You can see Hera next to Zeus holding out a hand above im. The man directly next to Zeus is Apollo, because he his holding a lyre. And hermes to the far left with his travelers hat
absent on 11-21-19. even tho the vase shows the gods they are all invisible to the humans in the picture. and altho it looks like its jumbled up it is actually telling a story from when athena was being born from a mans head to the symbol of athena. and this also shows that the images aren't bound by boundaries and the gods are the only ones that can go out of bounds showing that there of a different level than the humans and are not bound by everyday life.
The vase tells the story of how athena was born out of zeus's head. Because of this athena would become the goddess of wisdom, and knowledge. Zeus wanted his own daughter that no other person could say she was theirs so he gave birth to her from his head. On the right side we can see what looks like apollo becasue of the lyre that he is holding and standing next to zeus is hermes wearing his travelers hat. (absent 11-21-19)
There is Zeus with Athena being birthed from his head. Athena has her shield and spear in her hands. Zeus has his thunderbolts. Athena has no borders and is shown going over the decorative pattern. There is also a bird and that can be associated with Apollo if it is a raven. Hermes is on the far left with his winged shoes and his leather and cowboy hat. Hera is to the right of Zeus. Hera and another god are on the divine side. That other god might be Apollo because his eye line is up high and not looking down. It also looks like he might be holding a sword. Zeus and Athena are in the middle of the bowl so they are in between the mortal side and the divine side. There are two gods on the mortal side, I'm not sure who the one closest to Zeus is but the other one is Hermies.
This vase could mean that one side of the vase is going to war to the other side. The directions of the vase are facing right, and the other side of the vase is facing left. That could be a symbol of the Gods worshipping the left side of what they are doing. The symbols with what they are holding in their hands is they are wanting to go and fight for someone or something. The left-hand side isn’t holding anything they are mostly wearing armor. So that could mean something as well.

Normally divine beings are on the right,but in this depiction they are slightly to the left. Gods usually only manifest as non human depictions of themselves but here they are fully corporeal human figures. Harp goes outside the top border as well as Athena's head.
The goddess on the far right of the vase is Athena. You can see her big gold helmet putting her above everyone else in height. She is also carrying her spear and shield, both signs of Athena. In the middle sitting down is Zeus. The little person coming out of his head is thought to be a child he had himself that came out of his head. The person to the left of Zeus is Apollo, as he is holding a lyre. On the far left I assume is Hermes. You can kind of make out his winged shoes and the hat he is wearing could be the cap of invisibility. It is an interesting picture because even though Zeus is the king of the gods, he is sitting down and all of the other gods and goddesses are looking at him. The child coming out of Zeus's head still makes him taller than all the other gods, which is kind of significant. The head of the child also goes outside of the border, which could symbolize that a picture cannot hold his true size and power.
The larger middle god is interpreted to be Zeus and w believe this because Athena is being born out of his head during the vase. On the far left, it is Hermes and it is shown with his cap of invisibility, and winged boots. As well on the left, closer to Zeus is Apollo With his Lyre.If looked at closely, it is shown Athena being born more to the right side of the vase. This means she is a divine being rather than a mortal one. As shown as well, Apollo on the left side showing how he favors mortality and knowing limits.
The first thing I noticed about this vase was Zeus in the middle with Athena above him like she is coming out of his head. On the left I can see shoes with wings so I automatically thought of Hermes. I also see Apollo on left to the right of Hermes. I notice that all the gods and goddess are on the left and what looks like a pair of heroes are on the right. The overall theme I see in this vase is the gods helping the hero's giving them gifts to help them throughout their journey.
The picture as many different symbols in it. This shows Athena being birthed out of Zeus cranium with a spear and a shield. This represents a lot showing that Athena was always ready for anything. Being birthday and already being able/ ready to fight. The picture shows Apollo with his lyre and Hermes with his travelers hat because of his many interactions with mortals.
After analyzing the vase one can determine many things. For example, the smallest god (the women) can be identified as Athena. She has a few symbols which give out her identity, such as her spear, shield, and the fact that she is growing out of Zeus' head. The center figure/largest figure is Zeus. I know this because his daughter, Athena is being born from his head. The figure on the left of Zeus is most likely Apollo because of the lyre in his hands. The man of the very left is Hermes, he is wearing a hat resembling is travels. This is also who Dr. Castellani dressed up as.
Out of Zeus' head is Athena with her helmet and spear, because Zeus for some reason, the want to have a child of, 100%, his own creation or another reason, but nonetheless, he had a child from his cranium. To the right of his is Hear, his wife. You can tell because she is at his side. To the right of her is Ares, which you can see because of his helmet and spear, as well as with the dog on the shield. To the far left we can see hermes who is depicted with his winged shoes and his helmet. Then to the right of his is Apollo with is harp.
The goddess on the far right is Athena because she has a helmet and a shield both gold and both signs of Athena. She is also facing the right side, the mortal side, and she likes to help mortals. Apollo is on the left because he is facing the left and he likes to be immortal and keep mortals in the there place, so only the gods are immortal. He is also holding palm branches, a symbol of apollo. The god in the middle is Zeus because he is sitting on the throne and Zeus is the king of the gods.
