Vase Interpretation Quiz?
Based upon Dr. Castellani's presentation and your notes, evaluate this black/red figure vase image. Please decode through commentary.
Think about direction, borders, placement, and symbols or
manifestations. This blog response is a quiz and should be completed
during class today.

On this vace, Athena is above the border. It was mentioned that Athena has no boundaries and can go out of the border. Athena is towards the left side of the vase, which is the side that typically has mortals. The speaker mentioned that Athena liked mortals a lot compared to Apollo and others, so Athena being on the side with the mortals is symbolic of that. Athena is in the background of the vase, showing that she is invisible in the scene.
Here we see the birth of Zeus's daughter Athena. Zeus is sitting in the middle while Athena is coming out of his head. The top of her head is breaking the upper boarder to symbolize that she has no limitations and will push her boundaries
The vase is depicting the birth of Athena. The vase shows Hermes, Apollo, Zeus, Athena, and possibly Hera and Ares. The lyre and Athena are the only things on the vase to be breaking through the border.

The gods are actually larger than Athena, but in the image(in all of the images we witnessed) Athena was shown much bigger than the gods. Athena favored the immortals, and Athena loved all of the power that was given to her. The other Gods in this images sare shoved behind her almost invisible or they are also praising to Athena. There is also one of the gods that is right behind her that almost seems invisible in the image.
this is Athena coming out of her fathers head after he swallowed her mother and her.
She once again cuts through the border and all of the male gods have the same eye type
There doesn't seem to be any mortals so none of the gods are invisible at the moment
Athena is jumping out of Zeus head as he is talking to Hera. BUt he is sitting with lightning bolts in his hand, and Hera is standing. Is that a hint to their superiority. Also, there is a small "Being" or creature or God sitting under Zeus chair, who is that? Also, Athena is jumping into the upper border, her head sticks out, is that trying to show how powerful she is and how "Out of Place" she is?
This vase shows mortals on the left side. Athena is also on the left side because it was said that she liked mortals more than other gods. She is also shown above the boarder, I think this means that she has no boundaries and has no limitations.
This vase is definitely means more then you might think at just first glance. It is showing the birth of Athena from her father Zeus. He is sitting while athena is climbing out of his head and this is actually how she was born. We also see her breaking the boarder and showing that she's going to push beyond her limits.
This vase shows Athena running in the middle with a spear and shield in the background. Also, I can see a woman trying to negotiate with a man who looks like the king. Another thing that I can see is two guards and a man telling the king what to say and do in the background.
This image appears to be of Athena's birth from Zeus' head. Because Athena is the godess of wisdom and is a curious, slightly mischievous being, she violates the decorative boundaries of the vase. I know that the middle figure that is sitting is Zeus, because not only is Athena springing out of his head, but he is also holding thunderbolts.
This vase shows Athena breaking out of the vase border because she has no bounds, and how she is separated from a lot of the other gods because of how she likes humans. I think that specifically the vase is showing Athena's birth out of Zeus's forehead. I think this because its clearly Zeus, we know this because of him being in the middle and how he is holding his lightning bolt, they are also surrounded by other gods but none are rising to the same level as Athena.
On the vase, we see the birth of Athena. She is outside the border to show she has no limitations. The gods were larger in statue because Athena favored the mortals.
This vase illustrates some of the "art ideals" of ancient greece. it shows the mortals, on the left side, confronting the gods or divinities. It seems that there is an unusual piece where the mortals, or at least something in their possession is penetrating the border showing that Athena is on their side somehow helping them beyond their limits. It appears that the middle figure on the mortal side is stabbing the man sitting down in the back, possibly under control of the gods because both figures on the divine side are making direct eye contact with the mortal. it seems like the god on this vase are trying to get rid of the man sitting down to achieve some sort of leap in power for the other two mortals.
When looking at the image I can see on the left the more human side and then on the right the more divine and pure side, more godly. Dr. Castellani talked about how the gods always faced left towards the humans. I can see on the human side a figure/drawing that is going past the borders, which means something important, although I don’t know what the object is. The humans seem to be coming to the gods and giving them gifts and looking up to the gods, gods looking down upon them. I don’t know who the gods on the right are but could be Ares the god of war, because of his spear, sheild, and helmet. At the bottom I can see the animal side to the vase, how the man is sitting on the animal while giving something to the goddess.
This vase depicts the birth of Athena. There is a figure emerging from behind Zeus’ head. It is apparent that this figure is Athena because her head pierces the top border. This was a common way to depict Athena, as it showed that she went beyond limits and broke the status quo by helping mortals more than any other god or goddess. Also in the myth Athena was born with full armor with a shield and spear which is depicted on the vase. The figure that Athena is emerging from is Zeus, which is shown by the figure holding lightning bolts(a symbol of Zeus).
On this vase it hows athena breaking through the border which represents her birth from zeus, because it looks a bit like she is coming from him. Since it shows her coming out of his head it represents how she is the goddess of wisdom.
Zeus is sitting in the center looking to the right. In his hands he is holding this lighting bolts and on top of this head is Athena. Athena is holding a spear and her shield which are some symbols of her. Also, in most of the vase painting they make Athena head or helmet cross the border, which she is doing in this one. This shows how big Zeus is compared to the mortals because Athena is small (in this vase) and she is hitting the border. I'm guessing the border is a chain that lays in the middle of maybe torches. I think that the morals cannot see Athena or Zeus because they are gods.
The story depicted on this vase appears to be a story of importance and potentially chaos. In this depiction, Athena seeps beyond the vases' detailed border. The passing of the border symbolizes her ability to go beyond limitations that were set for her. She is continuously seen jumping past borders in other pieces of artwork. It shows that she sees herself with no limits and possibly that the rules don't apply to her. Athena's figure is behind the other characters, symbolizing being invisible or blending in. She favors mortals, and this might be why. She has no limits, allowing herself to see the world through a mortals eyes.
Athena was always shown with her crested helmet breaking thru the top border. Athena is smaller than the other gods pictured, but increasing her size showed her strength and and the power that she was given. Athena was almost always pictured on the left, while the battle and other gods/mortals was pictured on the right. Athena, having the power that she had been given, shows that although she was actually smaller than the other gods, she had no limitations, and could do just about anything.
This vase appears to have the birth of Athena illustrated on it. The two indisputable characters on the vase are Athena and Zeus, where Athena is jumping out of Zeus' head. Athena is jumping out from Zeus with spear and shield at the ready, and facing against the two figures on the right, which are likely of divine nature, probably signifying that Athena can and will stand against the divine if needed. One of the figures on the right side of the vase is seen beckoning Athena out of Zeus, likely due to Zeus' command, and not of her own will. Athena is also seen as the tallest or at least at a higher elevation than every other figure on the vase, likely signifying that Athena is more divine than any other god in a way.
The first thing I notice about the vase is that we can see Athena in the background with her shield and a spear. The artist portrayed her as breaking the border of the vase. This can definitely go to show that she pushes and boundaries and has little limits. It is also notable that she is in the background behind the others. This can go to show that she is invisible to them, but I think that she is still influencing them.
zeus is in the middle seated with Athena above breaking the border once again, mortals facing Zeus but Zeus is facing away showing his dislike for mortals.
The the vase represents Athena's birth and the creation of her from Zeus and the other Gods. Athena was born as the God of wisdom at is shown as she is coming out of Zeus’s head and how the other God’s on the vase are reacting to her. Athena is also very strong and compassionate. The vase shows this because she has her shield and spear ready to fight. It shows her strength.
The story shows Athena emerging from her fathers head, and breaking the border of the vase, and moving in favor of the mortal. it shows she is willing to break past limits set for her, and she is able to make a decision of her own to favor the mortals. It looks as if Athena is prepared to attack with her spear, or she is pointing in favor of someone. The image of surpassing limits is a constant one with Athena. I question why it is always her helmet that breaks the border, why not a spear? or a shield?
The vase is a representation of Athena's birth. This is shown through the emerging of her through her fathers head. She interrupts the border of the vase which signifies her acceptance of the mortal world. I noticed that Athena is in the background and has both the spear and shield with her. This could be representing the fact that Athena didn't necessarily have a direct impact but she still managed to influence them. The vase portrayed Athena in a very elegant and divine way.
On this vase it shows Athena's birth. athena is born out of her father's head. Athena is gazing at eye level which shows she is looking ahead and not looking down on mortal perhaps because she is speaking with the gods. she appears to be aiming her spear at something or someone and preparing to attack, as she hods her shield aside.
The figure in the middle is Zeus, with Athena coming out of his head. The horizontal line on the top supposedly represents the dividing line between the mortal and the immortal worlds. Athena is half on the mortal side, half on the immortal side. This is reflective of Athena's personality and what we know of her because of how much help she has historically provided to mortal heroes. She is also holding her sword and shield in the image, which represents her warrior-like personality and strength.
