Jason Vs. Perseus? Heroic?

Who is more heroic: Jason or Perseus? Please sight at least one example from our text and use the "heroic code" terminology to defend your claims.

I think Jason is more heroic because he endured many obstacles in the quest for the golden fleece such as the island where only women lived, the harpies and the fire breathing dragon. Jason fills out the heroic code as well. He had a desire to be recognized, and he wanted to claim his thrown.

I think that Perseus possessed more heroic qualities than Jason did. Perseus overcame the obstacles that he faced individually, while Jason would have failed without the assistance of Medea. Relating to the heroic code, Perseus received more direct help from the gods, a sign of strength, than Jason did. Perseus's action of slaying Medusa, which was seen as impossible, upheld the heroic code of pursuing excellence. While hybris is included in the heroic code, and Jason possessed more hybris than Perseus, my personal definition of a hero does not include hybris. Jason may have been a tragic hero, but I believe that Perseus was more of a true hero. Perseus helped more people and did not act as selfish was Jason did.

Perseus was more of a Hero than Jason since he never turned against his friends. Jason, after giving his word to Medea that he would marry her, exiled her from his kingdom. This makes Jason a liar, and lairs are not heroes. Perseus on the other hand never goes back on his word. He accomplished many goals in order to kill a monstrous king and free his mother and adoptive father from hiding. Perseus did kill his real father, however it was an accident. All murders committed by Jason were on purpose.

I personally feel that Perseus was more heroic. He went on his adventure in order to please the ones around him. The head of Medusa was to be a gift for his future father and mother. He did not go on this trip to prove his strength or feed his ego, like Jason. Jason's journey was taken so that he could rule his kingdom again. The only person that this would directly effect would be himself, and potentially Pelias. Although technically they both follow the heroic code by going on a journey to be recognized and defining their role in a heroic society. The actions of Perseus are much more noble, and thus more heroic.

I think Perseus is more of standard hero, he does almost everything right (or at least tries) and has few character flaws. Where as Jason is a very flawed character, but these flaws alone don't mean a person is not heroic they just cause us to need to look at the intention and result of the characters actions. such as his journey with the Argonauts his intention; to overthrow an evil king, the result; King is taken out of power, but the means by which this was achieved are questionable. I think both Perseus and Jason are heroic, but Jason is a conflicted and ultimately tragic hero.

Jason is definitely less heroic. Not only does he undertake his quest for selfish reasons, but his selfish nature prevents him from ever putting a goal greater than himself or anyone else first. This is best demonstrated when he attempts to marry someone other than Medea. In doing so, he doesn't care if he looses face or honor in her eyes, although she has been his closest companion.

I believe Jason is more heroic than Perseus because Jason was the 1st hero of Europe and is more widely remembered. Jason quested with many men over seas to find a Golden Fleece so that he could gain control over King Aetes. Jason did not try to achieve this so that he could be all powerful, he did it because he felt that it was right. Jason was never selfish and shared the glory with his comrades. He went through many obstacles such as the harpies, the island with only women, the dragon teeth soldiers, and fighting the dragon guarding the Golden Fleece. This dedication and determination shows the true hero in Jason.

Perseus is more heroic than Jason, because Jason is not much of a hero. Though Jason went on an epic quest to retrieve the golden fleece, he acted in many ways against the heroic code. He is arrogant and guilty of hubris because he believes that his desires are more important than anyone else and their desires. Jason used Medea's love for him to his advantage and didn't care for her at all. He made her kill her own brother so that they could escape with the golden fleece from Colchis, he had her use her magic to make Pelias' daughters tear him apart, and after everything Medea did for him, he married someone else. Jason did not care for anyone but himself, so he was not heroic at all, which makes Perseus more heroic than Jason.

Perseus is much more heroic over all. Although Jason follows much of the heroic code, he does not care much for his honor. He leaves his wife for another...not for love, but for power. Perseus on the other hand, finds his love, stays with her, and when power is presented to him (he could easily have taken over from Polydectes when he (Perseus) turned him (Polydectes) to stone.

Both are helped by the gods. However, Perseus becomes resourceful himself instead of relying on another as Jason relied on/used Medea. Instead Perseus himself uses Medusa's head, once his adversary now his tool, against his enemies.

I see Jason more as a cry-baby wimp, and Perseus as a more self-controlled, self-reliant individual.

I believe that Perseus is more heroic because he kills Medusa in order to make a proper gift of something for his gracious host. Perseus also receives help from the Gods, Athena and Hermes. This proves that he is a great hero because he has a desire for greatness that far surpasses his Arete. However Jason has hybris which Perseus does not. Perseus knows he is mortal where Jason assumes himself immortal after Medea falls in love with him.Perseus' prize that he pursues actually comes after he obtains Medusa's head. He finds a young maiden and kills the serpent she is to be sacrificed to then takes her hand in marriage. Then Perseus really portrays his Arete by turning all the kings men on the Island into statues with Medusa's head for attempting to kill his mother and the man who raised him.

Personally, I think Perseus is more heroic than Jason. Perseus used his powers to and accomplishments to help many people, while Jason fights to benefit himself. Perseus acts to save those he loves while Jason acts to feed his hunger for power.

I believe that Jason is more heroic than Perseus just do to the fact that he went on a deadly missions that had endless dangers. In the text Jason fights the harpies (frightful flying creature, who spoil food) so that the man who lived upon the island( the prophecy) could once again enjoy food with out the worry of the harpies spoiling it. Complete selflessness I believe is what defines a hero.

Perseus is more heroic then Jason. Perseus never ruined anyones life and was forgiving even to his grandfather. Unlike Jason who betrays Medea. "They would go back with Andromeda to Greece and try to be reconciled to Acrisius, to see if the many years that passed since he had put them in the chest had not softened him so that he would be glad to receive his daughter and grandson" (pg 208). Perseus forgave all who had done wrong to him. Perseus was not hubris like Jason.

I think that Jason is the more heroic of the two characters. Even though both of the hero's had to prove themselves and endure many different trials, I think that in the end Jason accomplished more in his journey. One reason why I think that Jason is a greater hero, is because of the beginning of his journey. It appeared that Perseus had a better and more loving home life than Jason. Because of this Perseus had less to overcome at the beginning of his journey than Jason did. Also, according to the heroic code, a hero must want to be recognized. All throughout Jason's journey he is striving to be recognized as a hero. "...he was grown he came boldly back to claim the kingdom from his wicked cousin." (Mythology, 161)

I feel that Perseus is more heroic than Jason. Perseus didn't betray anyone in the end. He accomplished his tasks and rid the evil from the island where Perseus grew up. Perseus "held up the Gorgon's head; and a the sight one and all, the cruel King and his servile courtiers, were turned into stone" (Hamilton 208). While Perseus didn't betray anyone who helped him, Jason did. Jason turned on Medea, and lost all of his honor. Medea destroyed everything that he had worked hard to build up, leaving him with nothing but a weak throne.

In my opinion I think that Jason was heroic compared to Perseus. Perseus had everything laid out in front of him, "But Perseus had Hermes with him, so that the road lay open to him..." I thought that Jason had to endure more than Perseus did, and all Jason did was to gain back something that was rightfully his whereas Perseus went to fight the Gorgons for his mothers wedding present. Although Jason did have the Gods looking over him also.

I think Perseus is more heroic than Jason. He mainly had only divine help whereas Jason used Medea for her powers to help him succeed. Jason seemed to rely on Medea and didn't even treat her well since at the end of the story, he leaves her. While both men have hubris, Perseus was at least trying to do something nice for the bride-to-be by bring a gift to her. "He was young and proud and keenly mortified. He stood up before them all and did exactly what the King had hoped he would do, declared that he would give him a present better than any there (200)." Jason just wanted his kingdom back because he felt it was his alone, at least Perseus's pride is benefitting someone else. And in the heroic code, he does indeed have the desire to be recognized but for a good cause.

i think that jason is more heroic because he has the desire to be recognized "he agreed and let it be known everywhere that is would be a voyage indeed." pg 163. he also pursues a prize and fame. but the biggest thing that that makes him more heroic is that he is was the first hero in europe which in my mind is the tie breaker between him and perseus

I think Perseus is more heroic because he pursues excellence (arete). He slays Medea, which was thought to be impossible. Perseus receives help from divinities, while Jason receives help from a witch and other heroes. Perseus' help received from the gods is more heroic, because he completed the tasks on his own, but the gods assisted him, rather than do the task for him. Although Jason went through hardships like fighting the harpies, and sailing by scylla and charybdis, perseus is still more heroic to me because he strives to feel worthy, dand he does his best.

I think that Perseus is more heroic. First of all, I don't think you could even really consider Jason a hero because he had other people do everything for him and then took credit for getting the fleece. Perseus took advice and help from other people such as Hermes but he still did many things with his own skills. Perseus is more heroic in his struggles because he handles them himself instead of through other people.

I think that Perseus is more heroic because his adventure just seemed more glorious. It seems like Perseus had more of the qualities that the heroic code says a hero needs to have. Jason was more in the middle; he fit parts of the code, but he violated other parts of it. Perseus didn't use anybody also, and he achieved his greatness with his own strength and power and help from the gods, which is a sign of a hero. Jason needed help, but he didn't get it from the gods and he pretty much disregarded the help that Medea gave him. I also think that there's a reason that people recognize Perseus' adventure more than Jason's; Perseus was just a better hero.

I believe that Perseus is the most heroic of the two due to the fact that he follows the code a lot closer than Jason. Jason assembles a team of men called the Argonauts, while Perseus is the only one who goes and kills Medusa. Also, Jason had the assistance of Medea while on his quest for the golden fleece. One element of the heroic code involves one’s identity and role in being
part of a warrior society. This implies that it is an individual accomplishment instead of a team accomplishment.

I would say that Jason and Perseus are equally heroic. Because Jason is trying to find the Golden Fleece in order to regain his fathers kingdom from the new evil king. And Perseus is heroic because he was the one who beheaded the evil monster Medusa. A quote to support Perseus "He himself, Hermes said, would give him a sword to attack Medusa with- which could not bend or broken by the Gorgon's scales, no matter how hard they were. pg 202.

I believe that Perseus is the better example of a hero. Perseus and Jason both seek adventures and never back down from a challenge, but Perseus is more honorable and therefore better upholds the heroic code. Jason is cruel to his wife, but Perseus does the right thing and is true to his wife. While Jason seeks to be a powerful ruler, Perseus seeks justice in the world. Also, Perseus is willing to forgive his grandfather while Jason is not willing to forgive Medea.

I believe that Perseus was the more heroic of the two because he faced the trek along with the two gods. he was doubted by others but thrived and accomplished what he was asked to do. And like many others said, Jason went on quests for his own benefits and was selfish, whereas Perseus went on quests for the benefit of others

Both (Perseus & Jason) had somewhat heroic qualities that characterize them as heroes. Perseus however, I believe, harnessed more qualities of a hero than Jason. Jason turned on Medea for another woman, which betrays the heroic code. He did search for fame and was a victim of hybris. Perseus killed the beast Medusa, which held the heroic code because he was looking for fame, but at the same time pursuing excellence (maybe even over excellence.

Perseus. He slayed Medusa's head off. Plus, Perseus Jackson has saved the world from Kronos and was affered immortality. Who gets that affered alot?

Unknown said...

Perseus to me was the better hero. He defied what no one said he could do by slaying medusa's head off not because people put him up to it but because he wanted to bring the best gift to them foor the wedding. to me that is more heroic. like wow he took out medusa and no one could. that to me is more impressiive. He was a true hero being a true hero not from the heroic code.
