"The Iliad" & "The Odyssey" What Do We Think?

With reference to The Iliad/Odyssey Video, what did it make you contemplate regarding archetypal patterns? Homecoming? Pride? The hero? Divinities? Heroic Code? Guest/Host? Hubris? Other? Please quote from either text or the video. Please complete this blog response by 3:31p.m. on Dec. 4th.

I find it interesting that in many of these myths, the hero in context in not necessarily a hero in all aspects of their lives. Odysseus may have been regarded as a hero and did come out victorious on his travel home, but he was also a cheater and lier. This makes me wonder if the greeks held different values than we do today? Was being a hero more of a matter of strength, wit, and achievement, rather than being ethical and moral?

The story shows a lot about odysseus's pride because when he is on the island with the cyclops he originally tells him his name is no man but once he has defeated him he tells him his same is odysseus just so the cyclops knows who ended him.

in the video they talk about how odysseus is first talked about as a child in the trojan war. that shows that he has lost something as a child. His trip ended up taking two years and it should have only taken two weeks. Odysseus has to face poseidon's wrath after blinding the cyclops. Odysseus is a hero because he prevailed through every hardship even though most of his men could not. Odysseus did not have much helps and ended up doing most of it by himself. I believe this events make him a hero. This story has a little bit of every myth and is almost like he is all the hero's put together.

"The first stories they have in the west.." I think the story of Odyssey is very interesting and puts an aspect on heroic figures. The story shows struggles and challenges that heroes go through. Odyssey never got the opportunity to go home, he was always sent on another challenge, or something had popped up, but this gave him the title of a hero, and gave him strength.

Odyssius is on his journey home and he had to go through a lot of hardships. It took him 10 years to get home. He almost defeated the cyclops but since Poseidon is the giants father and Poseidon retaliated and said that odyssius was to spend all the time at sea so it took him forever to get back home. He runs into all kinds of trouble and gets all of his men killed and turned into pigs. He has the offer to be immortal but he rufuses because he wants to live his life and be who he wants to be. He had many choices to get home and he ended up making one that cost some of his men but in life you have to make choices in life even if I try makes bad things happen.

Throughout nearly all Greek hero myths it is shown that the hero isn't always very heroic, in the Odyssey Odysseus is told to be a liar and a cheater, he indirectly kills his entire crew, like when he sacrificed 6 to get past Scylla the hydra, and he is very unmoral on the travel home. He is said to be a Hero because back during Greek times these things were very normal, so he was just a normal day man that was able to make a great journey home, one that many would have thought was impossible after any of the tasks Odysseus finished.

This story of Odysseus shows his journey back to get home. This story showed how he had to go through these tests and challenged that all tried to keep him away from home. But as Odysseus was, he chose to stay mortal and fight through the challenges to get home. Throughout out this, he was willing to fight through every challenge to get home. This is what gave him the title of a hero.

In the video, it is mentioned that there needs to be a bit of conflict for someone to become stronger. Odysseus shows a bit of pride when he blinds the cyclops, which is part of his struggle. It makes me think that the actions of heros in these myths end up making the hero's life more difficult later in life.

An Odyssey is a long voyage filled with adventure and obstacles. Homer, who wrote The Iliad/Odyssey, appears to beleive that only rhe strong survive. Odysseus himself is prideful and has a large ego. However, he is also strong and is able to overcome the obstacles he has to endure. As we also learn from the video, the gods and divinities represent natural elements and the qualities of humans. Odysseus wasn't just brute strength, he was human and had emotions and used his wits. Odysseus had to make many choices; he also had to overcome temptation of the sirens. Coming home is appealiing to most if not all people, because it is a place that is familiar. The entire Oddysey is a metaphor for the journey of life.

In other myths that we read that women are more curious and troublesome. Whereas, in the Iliad, the women are very important. For example, they said in the video that the women would see Odysseus away on his journeys and also shows a little more power in women, like the goddess turning Odysseus men into pigs. Also, the his wife is devoted and showing her to be smart to tell the men who want to marry her that she needs to sew something but unsews it at night to create time.

It made me question whether or not Achilles is a hero. Not only did he murder a bunch of people in cold blood, he murdered someone in vengeance. Of course that is only about the Iliad, but there is also the Odyssey. Odysseus is more of hero than Achilles. He has been more prideful than Achilles, but he was also more heroic in his Iliad counterpart.

Most of hat was said in the video they talked about the trojan war and the adventure of Odyssey. The things that he faced and how he was able to survive. Odyssey's although later on he was a hero, he had made a huge mistake and instead their trip went from 2 weeks to 10 years. They ran out of food and many were becoming weaker, so they made a stop and stayed in a cave, in which they had invaded over someone else. The giant was not happy do they left. but poked him in the one eye that he had. They had also connected Odysseus and Indiana Jones in the movie talking about their success, and how heroic they are. Although he went through so much and lost some of his men in the end he was happy and he finally settled down a little more.

Odysseus was a bit of an ego maniac. He risked his entire group of men, to pretty much prove some kind of point. At one point, he is basically told to forget about going back home because of how dangerous his explorations were. Odysseus made a choice not to tell his men about the sea monster, because he didn't want his men to stop rowing in that direction. He lost 6 of his men anyway. I would say that Odysseus was self absorbed, and only made choices based on what he wanted and how/if it would affect him.

Odysseus went on a long and hard journey, for ten years, to get home. It seems as if it is such a romantic story, however there was so much lying and cheating as well. His wife Penelope was home waiting while he was off on an island with beautiful women around him. There were a few different way for him to get home, and sadly the one he chose cost him a few lives of the men who were with him. Although his life was hard, he did end up with the title of "hero" in the end.

as this trip has been called, "The ego trip" it shows how Odyseus has to make choices to get home. on some he has to sacrifice some of his men to move on. Odyseyus knows that all of these trials must be passed for him to get home and truly display his successes. this journey truly demonstrates that sometimes the hard choices must be made to continue on, and that the idea of natural selection is at its peak for the team. when one of them messes up, they are punished for it

I think this is one of the first real action and adventure poem where the hero learns a lesson like when he was with Circe. Odysseus is a weird hero as he acts like a hero and is a hero but does very unheroic things, like knowing 6 men were going to die but still wen forth. A real hero might have found another way or even tried to prepare his men for the task. In this story we see a little more power in the women, like Circe being a sorceress but being right and taking justice on the men.

I think that this story these stories have more impacts and deeper roots in our modern culture then we even know. Many of the stories and movies that we see today often have a lot in common with these stories. The odyssey is a story of a hero. Just thinking of one of the heroes of our modern day of the top of my head I can find a lot in common with odysseus. Batman is a good example. In the first Batman we see him leave Gotham to redefine himself and comes back a changed and better man just like when odysseus left a soldier and came home a hero.

The video tells of how Odysseus went on a long journey or adventure and how it didn't go as planned and they made difficult choices to get home. Instead of 2 weeks it was 10 years. He lost many men or made a sacrifice for them. His life was hard and he ended up with the title hero in the end, but I wonder if he was actual a hero compared to the other Greek myths.

In all of the hero they have to go through test to prove them selves and the quest usually end up taking a very long time. Also A lot of of the heros do follow heros code but it does not make them a true hero. When the heros come back some are welcomes back with open arm and others not. Some have to prove that they are the king.

Odysseus is in a way a hero, not by choice but because of his circumstances. He was put through many trials through his journey, all because Poseidon was punishing him for blinding the cyclops. This punishment was brought on by Odysseus's own ego, because as he was leaving the island he revealed his real name and where he was from. Odysseus's pride was harmful in this case and cost him years at sea and all his men, but his final reward was his homecoming and being reunited with his kingdom and his wife.
